[ PSYCHOTHERAPY ]

Sometimes life gets to a point where the usual ways of coping aren’t working anymore. Where something feels stuck, heavy, or hard to name. Therapy is a space to slow down, to think, and to be heard, often in ways that everyday life doesn’t allow for. It is not about being fixed, it is about being met.

I offer psychotherapy for children, young people, adults and families, drawing on psychodynamic approaches and EMDR. My practice is relational, honest, and grounded in a deep respect for the people in front of me. I work with people navigating a wide range of experiences; including anxiety, depression, trauma, racial trauma, identity, relationships, loss, and the particular weight of living in a world that has not always been fair.

I have a particular interest in working with people from Black communities, and with anyone navigating the complexity of multiple, intersecting identities e.g. race, heritage, cultural background, class, gender, sexual orientation, faith, neurodivergence, immigration status, and more. If you’ve ever felt the world asks you to leave parts of yourself at the door, this is a space where you don’t have to.

I also work with people in caring, frontline, and emotionally demanding roles, who spend so much of their time holding others and need a space to be held themselves.

You don’t need to arrive with any of that worked out, or with the right language for it. Whatever’s brought you here, and whoever you are, you’re welcome.

EMDR

For some people, particularly where trauma is present, I draw on Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is an evidence-based approach that works with the way traumatic memories are stored in the body and mind, and can help people process experiences that have felt stuck or overwhelming. It can be used alongside psychodynamic work, and we can discuss whether it feels appropriate.

I’M JAY PERKINS

Therapy with me is collaborative. I don’t have a script, and I’m not interested in fitting you into a diagnostic box. I believe you are the expert of your own life, and my job is not to tell you what to think or feel, but to help you understand yourself more deeply.

I’m interested in you; your history, your patterns, your relationships, your inner world, and what you want your life to feel like.

• Psychotherapy sessions are 50 minutes, held weekly.

• EMDR sessions are typically 60 minutes.

• I work online and in person.

• We would begin with an initial consultation to explore what’s bringing you to therapy and whether working together feels like the right fit.

Working with children, young people and families looks a little different. With younger children, the work often happens through play and creativity as much as through talk; with teenagers, it’s about meeting them on their own terms; and with families, it’s about understanding the patterns and relationships you're all held within together. Where I’m working with a child or young person, parents and carers are part of the thinking throughout. If you’re getting in touch about your child or your family, we’ll talk through what would help and how best to begin.

My standard fee is £120 per session for psychotherapy, and £180 per session for EMDR.

I offer a sliding scale, because I believe what you can pay shouldn’t determine whether you can access support. I also offer a limited number of free therapy slots prioritised for Black young people.

I’ve spent over two decades working at the intersection of therapy, community, and systems change; as a youth worker, a psychotherapist, changemaker, senior leader, and the founder of Partisan; a Black-led organisation that spent five and a half years designing alternative help systems alongside Black and minoritised communities across South London and beyond.

I’M JAY PERKINS

My work is rooted in Black communities and shaped by a commitment to social and racial justice, however I work with anyone who is willing to start from a place of exploration and wanting to do the real work, regardless of race, heritage, cultural background, class, gender, sexual orientation, faith, neurodivergence, immigration status, or other intersecting identities. I look to create spaces to understand who you are and what you carry.

I show up as an upstander and an accomplice, not just witnessing what needs to change, but actively joining communities in the work of changing it.
